Russia convenes UN Security Council over events in Syria

Moscow plans to find out what is happening around the UN Force, which is responsible for maintaining the ceasefire between Israel and Syria.

Russia has initiated an urgent closed meeting of the UN Security Council due to the fall of the Bashar Assad regime in Syria. This was announced the day before by the First Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN Dmitry Polyansky in Telegram.

“Given the recent events in Syria, the depth and consequences of which for this country and the entire region are not yet fully understood, Russia has requested urgent closed consultations in the UN Security Council,” he wrote.

According to him, it is important to understand what is happening around the UN Force, which is responsible for maintaining the ceasefire between Israel and Syria and monitoring the buffer zone separating the Golan Heights, which has been taken under the control of the Israeli army, from the rest of Syrian territory.

As a reminder, on the eve of the Israeli ground forces crossed into Syrian territory for the first time in 50 years, crossing the demilitarized zone on the border. They took up strategic positions in the buffer zone on the Golan Heights after the fall of the Assad regime in Syria.
