Rebel flag raised over Syrian embassy in Moscow

The diplomatic mission noted that the embassy is operating normally under a new flag.

In Moscow, the flag of the rebels who overthrew the regime of President Bashar al-Assad has been raised over the Syrian embassy. This was reported by Russian media on Monday, December 9.

It is noted that the flag was raised by representatives of the Syrian diaspora. The diplomatic mission stated that the embassy is operating normally under a new flag.

The day before, employees of the diplomatic mission lowered the Syrian flag and also removed the sign with the name of the institution.

The new flag is a green-white-black cloth decorated with three red stars. It was previously used by the Syrian Republic in 1932-1958. The opposition in Syria adopted it at the beginning of the open confrontation with the regime of Bashar al-Assad in 2011. Since then, this flag has become a symbol of resistance – Syrian oppositionists have taken it to rallies around the world.

Before that, the flag of the former United Arab Republic had been used in Syria since the 1980s. It was also tricolor – red-white-black, with two green stars.

As a reminder, the rebels entered the capital of Syria – Damascus, took control of the international airport and administrative buildings in various districts of the city. The command of the Syrian army informed officers that the rule of Bashar al-Assad was over.
